Work on the $163 million expansion project delayed.

Where: 1285 Elmwood Ave., Buffalo

Cost: $163 million

General contractor: Gilbane Building Co.

Construction start: Fall 2019

Original construction finish: Early 2022

New expected finish: To be determined, but 2022 remains target date

What happened: Drive by Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and all you will see is a giant hole in the ground.

That’s because when work stopped, crews were excavating the gallery’s surface parking lot to make way for an 85,000-square-foot wing and underground parking ramp.

The expansion, to be built on the left side of the excavation area in the photo, will be attached by a walkway or bridge to the original portion of the museum.

The excavation, which dives down 30 feet, was to be finished in May. Foundation work was to start this fall.

At its peak next year, more than 150 construction workers will be on site.

John Cleary, senior project executive for Gilbane Building, said the company was adhering to all COVID-19 protocols before work shut down in late March.

“At this time, it is too early to say what the impact may be to the AK360 schedule given the number of variables involved,” Cleary said, “but the goal is to deliver the project with the least possible impact to the timeline.”
